How to Bid
Bid in Person: Join us at our Auction Gallery located at 643 Kriner Road, Chambersburg, PA
When you arrive at our gallery, go to the registration desk to register for a bidder number. You will need to show a valid driver’s license or photo ID. 15% Buyer’s premium discounted to 10% for cash or good check.
Leave an Absentee Bid: By Fax, Email, Mail or In Person
Print and complete our Bid Form (PDF) indicating your maximum bid on each lot, excluding the buyer’s premium. Lot numbers and a short description of the items should also be indicated on the form. Return this form to us by fax (717) 263-6512; or scan and email to info@gatewayauction.com or regular mail (643 Kriner Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202). After the bid form has been received, you will be contacted via phone or email to confirm receipt, except on auctions days. Please allow sufficient time for surface mail.
Be sure to sign and date the form on the signature line at the bottom. We require a Major Credit Card number to secure your absentee bid.
Absentee bids left with us are executed confidentially and competitively. Bidding is executed on an alternating basis between bidders. Tie-bids may go to another bidder depending on where bidding falls. We never disclose to anyone any information about absentee bids.
Bid Online: We are proud to offer real-time online bidding through our website, as well as online bidding through our partner websites Invaluable/AuctionZip and HiBid.
To participate in our auction online, clients have three options:
- Register and bid at GatewayAuction: 15% buyers premium discounted to 10% for cash or good check
- Register and bid at HiBid: 15% buyers premium discounted to 10% for cash or good check. All bids placed on HiBid are absentee bids. They will be downloaded into our clerking system approximately 2 minutes before the live auction begins. The auctioneer will execute those bids competitively between in house, other absentee bidders, phone bidders and live online bidding.
- Register and bid on Invaluable; 20% buyers premium discounted to 15% for cash or good check. *Please note Invaluable and AuctionZip platforms are only available during Specialty auctions.
Gateway does not guarantee that live Internet bidding will be uninterrupted or without error, or that Internet bids will be received.
Bid by Telephone: During the auction, a member of our staff will call you about 3 minutes before the item comes up, and act as your proxy at the auction. We sell an item about every 45 seconds and you must be prepared to bid quickly. We sell in the numerical order indicated in the catalog, and we sell about 70-90 lots an hour.

Gateway does not guarantee that remote phone bidding will be uninterrupted or without error. Clients bidding from a cell phone are encouraged to leave a maximum bid which will function as an absentee bid should the call fail.
