Every auction we hold is unique.

Our auctions are made up of items from different estates, downsizes, collections, and
homes, each with its own story and history. Our job is to bring those pieces together,
organize them thoughtfully, and create an auction that offers something interesting for
every type of collector.

Sometimes, though, something unexpected happens.

A theme begins to emerge—not because we planned it, but simply because the right
items happened to arrive at the right time.

That’s exactly what happened with Monday’s auction.

As we were putting everything together, we realized we had an unusually large selection
of duck decoys, hand-carved birds, American eagle-themed wall carvings, bird
artwork, and even turkeys.

Was it planned? Not at all.

Was it intentional? Definitely not.

But once everything was together, it was hard not to notice that the birds had seemingly
taken over the auction!

From Decoys to Decorative Art
For collectors, this unexpected combination makes Monday’s auction particularly
interesting.

Duck decoys have a long history as both functional objects and collectible works of art.
Depending on their age, maker, carving style, condition, and history, decoys can appeal
to collectors of folk art, sporting memorabilia, Americana, and traditional carving.
Then there are the bird carvings—each one with its own character, style, and
personality. Some are realistic representations of familiar birds, while others are more
artistic interpretations.

Add in artwork featuring birds and turkeys, along with several American eagle-related
carvings, and suddenly we have quite the collection of wings, feathers, and beaks!

The Fun of the Unexpected
This is one of the things we enjoy most about the auction business.

You never quite know what is going to come through the door.

One estate may contain an extensive collection of duck decoys. Another may have
beautiful wood carvings. Someone downsizing may have a piece of Americana they’ve
owned for decades. Individually, these items may have nothing to do with one another.
But when they come together in an auction, sometimes a surprising pattern appears.
That’s part of what makes every auction different—and part of what makes browsing an
auction so much fun. You may come looking for one particular item and discover
something you never knew you were looking for.

A Coincidence Worth Exploring
We can’t take credit for planning Monday’s bird-themed collection. It was simply one of
those happy coincidences that occasionally happens when you bring together the
contents of many different homes and estates.

But we’re not complaining.
