CHAMBERSBURG—Each year since 1970, communities across the globe have celebrated Earth Day on April 22.

From global warming to pollution to clean water and energy, efforts are made across the globe to protect our environment.

This year’s theme is “Restore Our Earth” and EARTHDAY.ORG is focused on five programs: The Canopy Project, Food and Environment, Climate Literacy, the Global Earth Challenge and The Great Global CleanUp.

An easy way to honor the earth is to plant a tree or pick up trash in your neighborhood. But another way is to recycle—not just plastics and paper, but through buying and selling household goods.

Auction is a great place to start.

“When you really think about the amount of stuff sitting in this building every week and how many times we say ‘sold’, we are probably the largest recycling facility in Franklin County,” said Heather Kohler, Gateway Gallery Auction president and auctioneer. “We supply antique dealers, yard sale-ers and the general public with quality household items that are pre-loved, but have a lot of use left in them.”

Gateway Gallery Auction holds about 42 personal property/estate auctions annually, in addition to real estate auctions.

“Many people don’t realize that auctions provide an environmentally-friendly alternative for both consignors and buyers,” Kohler said. “We love to see our buyers reuse or upcycle items. It’s just one way to leave behind a better, greener planet.”
